How Amanda from Planted Design revitalized plant walls in the US
On SecondFlor The Magazine, meet a multiple Emmy-award winner and female entrepreneur, Amanda Goldberg. She founded Planted Design in 2013 and has been changing the industry of living architecture since then. Preserved plant walls are used in biophilic design to bring in the outside nature and all its benefits. That is what she and her team work for. Let’s hear her story.
SecondFlor : Hi Amanda, can you describe your background in a few words ?
Amanda Goldberg : I am Amanda Goldberg, and I founded Planted Design 10 years ago. We are committed to dream, create and build one of a kind, living vertical gardens, moss walls & plant arrangements. Prior to founding Planted Design, I worked with Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute (C2C) and was the Director of Environmental Systems for New Earth Music Hall. I hold a Masters of Science in Regenerative Design from Cal Poly Pomona where I concentrated on plants’ ability to enhance building performance by improving air quality.
SF : Can you tell us the story behind the creation of Planted Design ?
AG : Planted Design was born out of a love of industrial and sustainability design. I wanted to introduce more plants into people’s lives and be able to bring greenery into spaces that you wouldn’t expect to see anything there. We want to create this reality to have plants integrated in our lives fully and deeply. We feel that everyone should be surrounded by plants and nature, and that living walls and moss walls will be part of the norm.
SF : When and how did you come across preserved plants ?
AG : I came across preserved plants about 9 years ago. There was a need for clients to be able to have a product that looked lush all year round without maintenance.
SF : What was your favorite project to work on so far?
AG : We have created some really unique projects because our fabrication and design teams are so willing to get creative and innovate with our products. We’ve made shelves for kiosks, freestanding mosses shapes, and a 12-foot pyramid of greenery flowing out from a floating watering can. Last year, we completed a project for a large tech company that was over 8,000 Sq Ft, some of which had LED lights woven through.
How do you experience ecology through your work?
AG : We take ecology and sustainability very seriously in our approach to all the work we do here at Planted Design. We work with local nurseries and all of our vendors are ecologically forward and diligent stewards of the land they harvest from, in order to preserve nature and also their own businesses.
SF : What do you see as the future of stabilized plants?
AG : Integrated in more unique and eccentric ways!
SF : What do you like about Secondflor?
AG : They are a wonderful team to work with. Clear communication with beautiful, vibrant products. When they are out of a specific product, they always offer great solutions to make a true impact.
What projects do you have for the future ?
AG : We have some unique installations coming up! You'll have to follow along to see them come to life.
